The Navy has authorized new hairstyles for men and women in a just-released uniform policy and grooming standards update. Wigs or hairpieces may be worn by active duty personnel while in uniform or duty status only for cosmetic reasons to cover natural baldness or physical disfigurement. Wigs may be worn by Naval Reserve Personnel engaged in inactive duty for training.b. Women also have more options wearing high heels in uniform and can wear heels as high as 3 inches now — a slight increase from the previous maximum height of two and five-eighths inches. These heels may be purchased commercially if they align with other uniform standards such as color, design and fabric. Sideburns may be worn, too, except in the case of bald sailors, if they are not longer than the length of hair.

Female Sailors are required to maintain similar standards while on duty or in uniform.
